IT traineeship

The ideal start to your career with Europe’s biggest online bank

The Information Technology traineeship at ING prepares talented graduates for future roles such as an IT Team Lead, Development Engineer, Data Scientist or IT Security Specialist. ING is Europe’s biggest online bank and the largest employer of IT professionals in The Netherlands. We’re frontrunners in mobile applications for a range of operating systems. The lion’s share of all our customer contact occurs online. ING has over 5.6 million customers who bank via the internet, an average of 1.2 million customers log in to our Dutch online banking portal Mijn ING every day, and about 145,000 transactions are processed daily.

2.6 million unique users of mobile banking app

ING’s mobile app is currently used by 2.6 million customers, who together account for 2.2 million unique log-in sessions a day. We consider it important to help our customers to gain insight into, and an overview of, their finances. More than 75% of the Dutch citizens with a mobile banking app indicate that it gives them a tighter grip on their money matters. Our app is also the most highly rated mobile banking app (iCulture Awards, 2015) and has been up among the top 10 most popular apps in the Netherlands for years . Customer feedback forms an important basis for further developments, and we are continually working to make the app even easier for our customers to use.

State-of-the-art software

In the dealing room, the commercial heart of the bank, ING works with state-of-the-art software. We also build much of our own software, such as for pricing and risk. Hence, it should come as no surprise to you that we’re constantly working on IT innovations.

A wide range of projects revolving around innovation

When you join ING as an IT trainee, a whole world of opportunities opens up to you. There is an extensive range of projects involving various systems and applications. In these projects you can show your passion for IT. Your work, both during and after your traineeship, will revolve around innovation. You’ll be focused on optimising advanced, reliable and scalable technological solutions to meet our customers’ ever-changing needs. And you’ll find not only the IT solutions themselves interesting, but also the fact that you work closely with top-level specialists in their respective fields: IT experts and business experts who’ll share their wealth of experience with you.

The lifeblood of the bank

Information Technology is the lifeblood of ING; the banking world is changing rapidly and IT forms the basis for these changes. IT is linked with all aspects of the bank and is the foundation of many of the innovations we implement as a bank. One example of this is the introduction of banking via voice and fingerprint recognition. IT is also playing a crucial role in all the internal and external processes. Hence, as an IT trainee, you’ll learn a lot about many of these different areas and activities. This far-reaching impact on both clients and colleagues places IT at the cutting-edge of our business. After all, the IT decisions of today influence the shape of our company in 10 years from now. That’s why we invest so heavily, such as in SaaS, APIs and cloud solutions, but also in fin-tech initiatives and other start-ups. We implement the best IT solutions and we develop our own software. We mainly work via the continuous delivery method and are organised in DevOps teams. We operate in an international world and are involved in highly complex matters, which lends an extra-challenging dimension to working in IT at ING.

Your first project: a firm foundation

As your first traineeship project you can choose from a variety of important IT projects and your input and contribution to this project will be of great importance. This first project also provides you with a firm foundation to build on, and is a good introduction to the role of IT within the bank. A typical first project could be a role as a developer within a Scrum team. During your first project, you receive support and mentoring from a senior manager as well as your talent manager.

Your second project: putting your know-how to good use

It’s up to you to arrange your second project using your network and your own initiative. Many of our trainees opt to work on an international project for this second six-month period. In your second project, you could work as a Data Champion or as a Development Engineer, for example. This is your chance to demonstrate how your know-how can help us to improve the services we offer.

Your first job: solving complex IT issues

This two-year period enables you to enhance your knowledge and hone your skills. Many of our IT trainees start out within one of the different IT areas as an IT specialist or as an Enterprise Architect, for example. Whatever you choose, you’ll be dealing with large and complex IT issues.

Shape your own career

You’re in charge of your own career path. We offer you the opportunities, the tools and the facilities, but it’s up to you to use them effectively to make your traineeship a success.

General and specialised training courses

Regardless of their chosen track within the ING International Talent Programme, all of our trainees participate in our global learning events. During these events you learn about core banking (such as the role of a bank, the bank balance sheet, bank funding, IT processes and risk management) among other things.

The training programme specifically for IT entails studying for CFA I and you can supplement this with further courses related to engineering skills.

Express route to a pivotal role within Information Technology

Are you looking for an express route to a pivotal role within Information Technology at one of the largest employers of IT professionals in the Netherlands? Do you hold a master’s degree, preferably in Computer Science, Informatics, Software/Computer Engineering or Mathematics? Does ING’s international and highly complex environment appeal to you? Do you enjoy thinking up ways of applying the very latest technological developments in order to offer our customers the best possible service? And can you then translate your ideas into concrete evaluations and plans, which you subsequently go on to implement? Do you thrive on ambitious objectives and do you dare to assume responsibility? Are you prepared to invest in yourself and your career, and are you keen to learn a lot in a short space of time, both about yourself and your specialist area?
